At Foyle College, Key Stage 3 represents the crucial first three years of post-primary education — from Year 8 to Year 10. It's a time for pupils to explore a broad curriculum, develop essential skills, and discover what they enjoy and where their strengths lie.

We ensure every pupil receives a balanced, inclusive and engaging learning experience designed to prepare them for success at GCSE and beyond.

Supporting the whole child

Academic development is just one part of the KS3 journey. We also prioritise wellbeing, confidence, and character — all supported through:

  • Daily tutor time and form classes
  • Head of Year guidance and weekly check-ins
  • Assemblies, themed weeks and whole-school events
  • Access to school counsellor and wellbeing services
  • Induction programme for new Year 8s

Assessment & Progress

Throughout KS3, students are regularly assessed in each subject to monitor progress and identify support needs. Feedback is given in class, via the Parent App, and through written reports.

Parents receive:

  • Pupils receive three reports per year, one of which is a written report
  • Access to SIMS or parent portal to monitor homework and progress
  • A dedicated parent-teacher meeting annually

Preparing for Key Stage 4

In Year 10, pupils begin guided conversations about their GCSE subject choices. This process is supported by:

Transition Support:

  • Individual career advice interviews
  • Parent information sessions
  • A taster programme and subject fair
  • Transition planning with Heads of Department

Life beyond the classroom

KS3 pupils are actively encouraged to participate in clubs, societies and House events. Popular activities include:

  • Rugby, hockey, football and netball
  • Choir, orchestra, and musical productions
  • STEM club, art club and debating society
  • Super Council and Year 8 Mentoring Programme
  • Duke of Edinburgh (starting Year 10)
