P.E. Department
Physical Education is about providing individuals with a variety of enjoyable, demanding, and rewarding challenges through which physical skills, knowledge, and understanding can be developed. It plays a vital role in the total education of an individual, beginning in childhood and fostering a lifelong commitment to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Departmental Aims

  1. Provide appropriate opportunities and experiences for individuals to achieve their optimum potential.
  2. Focus on physical capabilities while also developing essential knowledge and understanding.
  3. Enhance personal skills within a social setting through participation in a well-structured Physical Education programme.
  4. Encourage planning, performing, and evaluating to suit each individual's needs and strengths.

Departmental Objectives

The aim of Physical Education is to foster enjoyment and satisfaction, encouraging lifelong participation in an active and healthy lifestyle. Through the Northern Ireland Curriculum, each pupil will have the opportunity to develop:

Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills in a Range of Activities

  • Practise, refine, and develop skills and techniques.
  • Experience, monitor, and understand short-term effects of exercise on the body.
  • Monitor and evaluate personal activity levels over time, planning how to meet health recommendations.
  • Develop knowledge of safe practices and procedures in sport and physical activity.
  • Analyse and improve their own and others' performance.
  • Work effectively with others in tasks requiring co-operation, creativity, problem-solving, planning, and teamwork.

As Individuals

  • Make informed decisions about goals and quality improvement.
  • Develop positive relationships and respect for differing capabilities.
  • Experience and evaluate the health and fitness benefits of various physical activities.
  • Foster positive sporting behaviour and a sense of fair play.

GCSE

At Foyle College, we offer the WJEC Eduqas GCSE Physical Education qualification. This broad and practical course is designed to inspire and challenge learners while equipping them with knowledge, understanding, skills, and values to enhance their performance in physical activities. It also promotes awareness of the benefits of physical activity on health, fitness, and well-being. Students will develop theoretical knowledge and apply it to improve performance.

A-Level

Foyle College also offers WJEC A-Level PE, which enables learners to:

  • Develop theoretical knowledge of the factors underpinning physical activity and sport.
  • Understand how physiological and psychological states influence performance.
  • Analyse key socio-cultural factors that shape involvement in sport and physical activity.
